The leaders of the liberation movement were worried that it was becoming increasingly unsafe to meet at Liliesleaf, because too many people knew about it. However, on 11 July 1963 they decided to meet there one last time to review Operation Mayibuye (Operation Comeback) – a plan for guerrilla warfare.
Quite coincidentally, the police raided Liliesleaf that same day, based on a tipoff that public enemy #1 Walter Sisulu was hiding there, and stumbled upon the meeting. The arrests of the liberation leadership decimated the internal structures of the liberation movement, almost paralysing the struggle until the 16 June 1976 student uprising more than a decade later.
