There were those in the liberation movement who were concerned the Freedom Charter’s emphasis on non-racialism together with the influence of Communism would dilute the core message of black nationalism. Robert Sobukwe, Potlako Leballo and Josias Madzunya, believed that only black people could save the black people of South Africa. In 1958, they decided to break away from the ANC and form the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) with Sobukwe as their leader.
