SACP member Arthur Goldreich and his family pretended to be the ‘white owners’ of Liliesleaf farm, creating the façade of a white middle-class family. The farm grew market produce and leased land to neighbours. Arthur was the celebrated designer of the sets and costumes for the sensational jazz opera with a all-black cast, King Kong. The sleeve of the LP from the show said, “No theatrical venture in South Africa has had the sensational success of King Kong. This musical, capturing the life, colour and effervescence – as well as the poignancy and sadness – of township life, has come as a revelation to many South Africans that art does not recognise racial barriers.”
